In Memory of the 49th Division (Wolf)168th Infantry Regiment (Unit 18704)
Originating in Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, and formed in Daegu, Korea, this regiment comprising 3,530 brave soldiers from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan was later reinforced in Fukuoka and Kurume.
They fought with great courage in the fierce battles of the Dan Operations (Mong La and Tengchong),Nanpaka, the Ban Operations (Irrawaddy Campaign), and in Meiktila, Kangyi, Indaw, Sadaung, and beyond.
Across Burma, 2,836 lives were lost, including 1,855 killed in action and 981 missing.
Here in Meiktila, 237 soldiers, including Regimental Commander Shiro Yoshida, gave their lives.
A total of 192,735 Japanese soldiers perished in Burma, along with countless members of the Allied forces and many Burmese civilians.
